We recently posted up about Rosemarie Fiore’s time lapse arcade art - so be sure to check out her works made by exploding live fireworks… bursts of saturated color overlaped and collaged into abstract compositions.

Awhile back a reader asked what the MAKE digital edition is and what the links in the blog posts do if you’re a MAKE subscriber, so here’s a quick screencast/video I made. You can view it here or get the MP4.
MAKE Digital Edition is a vivid replica of the print edition of MAKE, it offers an experience very much like the print magazine plus many additional benefits, such as online searching, embedded multimedia and printing. Please note that MAKE Digital Edition can be viewed from any web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc.) and requires NO DOWNLOADING of software (it’s not a DRM’ed PDF, just a log in and password) - giving you instant access to your entire MAKE collection. You can share it, print it and get extra content - we have the FAQ here too.
What is MAKE - Digital Edition?
- How do I add digital editions to my subscription?
- Do I pay more for digital access?
- Can I get just the digital edition?
- What technology do you use for digital editions?
- What am I entitled to view and search?
- Can I share MAKE - Digital Edition with Friends?
- Can I print out articles from MAKE - Digital Edition?
- And more…. Link.

Kurtoskalacs is the oldest hungarian pastry. It translates as chimney cake. It was origionally made by wrapping the dough around the chimney pipes. I ate it for the first time in Budapest this past summer. My mother ( who is 100% hungarian) told me she used to make it as a child with her parents. I made a Kurtoskalacs maker that we could use in our fireplace and on a fire pit.
Supplies
The supplies consist of:
4 Angle (offset) 1/16" thick 3/4" x 48" Aluminum angle rods.
1 3 1/2" x 2′ dowel (doesn’t have to be exact diameter. the larger the better)
2 brass or steel rods (again size doesn’t matter too much)
urethane glue (or any high temperature metal wood glue)
nute and bolts ( 1/2 inch length worked for me)
tools:
drill, sawzall, ha…

Here’s a quick how-to on making egg rolls. You’ll need:
Egg Roll wrappers from your local grocery
Bean Sprouts
Carrots
Cabbage or Chinese Nappa
Green Onions
Bamboo Shoots
Garlic
Ginger
Soy Sauce
Shrimp, chicken, firm tofu, or a combination of all three.
If you don’t have some of these- improvise! Use powdered ginger, lettuce, cooked ground pork- it’s the form that’s important, not the exact recipe.
Cooking the filling
Heat a few tablespoons of peanut oil in a wok or skillet, and stir fry a littel garlic and ginger. How much? Well, how much do you like? Say a couple of cloves of garlic and a quarter teaspoon of grated ginger.
Add a cup of shredded cabbage, some shredded carrot, a cup of bean sprouts, maybe a quarter cup of cut-up bambo…

Here is how I took an image from photo to black and white line art. There are some extra steps, things I probably wouldn’t do the same way again, but this shows how it was actually done. One of the ideas was to convert an image, and still have some human handwork in it.
The descriptions of many of the photos in this set tell some of the process:

start with a photo
Start with a photo. It is probably better if it has some decent contrast, but that can be fixed later.
find edges
Open it in gimp
Adjust the image with a filter
I used the find edges, edges filter
Since it is a color image, it will find all kinds of cool colors. They’re nice, but we don’t need them.

How to draw a cube! Pretty simple, but surprisingly, lots of people don’t know how to do this…
Step 1
Draw a square. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just a square.
Step 2
Add lines coming out from 3 of the corners of the square, as shown below. If you want to make the cube look like it is coming from a different side, simply make them coming from different corners.
Step 3
Connect the lines. …look at the picture…
You can use this techniques to make other shapes look 3-dimensional, too!
Have fun drawing cubes!!!!
