If you’ve got a dual channel oscilloscope handy (got mine for $49 on ebay), you can create some amazing imagery using the X-Y mode setting and/or ADD setting).

All you have to do is feed a separate signal (like a sine wave and a triangle wave for example) into each of the 2 channels, combine them into 1 signal using ADD, and adjust the signal frequencies til you get something like what you see below.

At some point, you hit a sweet spot that generates these images (these still images don’t really do the moving images justice, but the imagery is still asthetically pleasing. Some of the moving images rival Hollywood monitor effects.

Cinnamon Souvlaki-Pita

Posted by Blogsnapper at 11:04 am

Cinnamon Souvlaki-Pita

Souvlaki is a popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer. It may be served on the skewer for eating out of hand, in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces, or on a dinner plate, often with pilaf. The meat is traditionally pork in Greece, or in modern times increasingly chicken. In other countries and for tourists, souvlaki may be made with other meats such as lamb and sometimes fish (especially swordfish).

The terminology of souvlaki and its variants is confusing and inconsistent. Depending on the context, the term ’souvlaki’ by itself may refer to any of the variants. In some regions and some restaurants, the name shish kebab is used to den…

Popcorn Lamp

Popcorn Lamp

A basic lamp with a popcorn cover; if this is new to you, the skills learned here can be applied in making other lamps out of nearly anything: PCs (I knew they were good for something), outdated gaming systems, textbooks…

Anyway, here are the materials:

Popcorn container. A google search for this can be found here. Choose which kind you want to use.

A basic light fixture (see pictures)

A "click" switch (again, see picture)

Scrap of wood at least 1.5 inches thick (softer is better, but not too soft)

Tools:

Power Drill and bits

A small philips head screwdriver

Gather your material…

Hobby parts for articles

David is offering up a free graphics LCD if you cook up an article, he writes -

Submit an article to get valuable electronics components in trade for publication on this site. The free graphics LCD offer has been great fun and I still receive request for the LCD. Unfortunately many of those requesting the LCD do not have a web site. The solution is for uC Hobby to host their project articles.

uC Hobby » Blog Archive » Hobby parts for articles - Link.

Of course there are tons of places to post from projects, from Instructables to Flickr - but a free LCD is a good deal too!

I’ve posted a few times (here and here) about the amazing work of Alison Gordon at Wonderland Q, most recently from the Sampler contributions. Alison also is an organizer of Bazaar Bizarre and a helper to the Sampler. She’s a dedicated crafter and like most people who are trying to make it on their own does not have her own health insurance. Alison recently suffered a medical emergency with sky high medical bills. Thankfully, Rene Garner and friends have organized an etsy shop called Wonderland Retreat to raise funds that will help pay for Alison’s medical bills. If you’d like to contribute a donated item to the shop, email Renee at wonderlandretreat@gmail.com. Otherwise, take a look at the shop and buy something crafty to help support a craft friend in need. Marie at the Sampler reports that after less than 24 hours since the fundraising shop has gone up over $1,000 worth of handcrafted donations have gone up. [ via ] Link.

Super 8 movie making - smallformat

James from Retrothing writes in -

I’ve been working on a Super 8 movie making magazine called smallformat with a bunch of dedicated Super 8 filmmakers from Europe. We’re putting the finishing touches on our ninth issue this week. It’s an eclectic mix of nostalgia and modern filmmaking information that introduces the ‘digital generation’ to the magic of film.

The really cool bit? They have started to offer free downloads of their articles in pdf format.

This is a project that I’ve invested a lot of sweat and tears into over the past 18 months. Even though it’s a tiny magazine with only a few thousand readers, we’re doing everything we can to make it world-class. Who knows… perhaps part of my love of film is that I was too young to use Super 8 in its heyday during the 1970s, but it’s a stunningly beautiful medium when combined with modern computer-based editing and effects software.

Adding an Antenna to a underpowered Router

Posted by Blogsnapper at 10:04 am

Adding an Antenna to a underpowered Router

I have a D-Link router of the 2.4 gHz type. It supports 802.11b and I use it for all of the laptops I repair and test. I occasionally want to push the signal to the other end of the house, and I chose to do this, rather than buy a new add-on antenna.

Recycle, man…Recycle.

Getting Started…

I chose to keep the D-Link and cannibalize the Linksys for two reason, the first being that the Linksys uses a weird propietary 50-pin header to connect the card to the motherboard of the router. The second is that the D-Link uses a mini-PCI card as the receiver. I have a future use also, and this will make an upgrade easier, by far.

I also note the mini-PCI actually HAS two antenna inputs soldered on the …
