Bicycle rim antenna

Bike Rim Antenna-2
Bike Rim Antenna Detail-1

Keep an eye out for good salvagable parts, especially around spring cleaning time -

Several months ago I was walking home from the post office, nearing my place I saw it was “clean-up week”, the curb dotted with various piles of junk people had put out to be disposed off by the council pickup. The pile outside my block of units had mostly busted furniture, but one item caught my eye, an Aluminium bicycle rim. I dug it out and took a closer look. The spokes and hub were all rust-pitted chromed steel, and physically it was for a child’s bike, only around 580 mm in diameter, but the Aluminium itself looked to be in good shape. Antenna was the immediate thought, so I carried it back to the shack.

Head over to Alan’s lab for detailed info - Bicycle Rim Antenna for 20 Metres [via]

Firewinder adds LEDs to wind powered lighting

Posted by Blogsnapper at 12:03 am

The “Firewinder”, developed by British maker/inventor, Tom Lawton, is a hanging, wind-powered light that spins horizontally to illuminate LEDs in a spiral motion across its face. The brightness of the LEDs depends on how fast the turbine spins which allows for a cool visualization of the wind in its immediate vicinity. Really simple application, but effective nonetheless.

Posted by Blogsnapper at 12:03 am

Make Pt0542-1
We’ve added comment avatars on MAKE, so if you register to post comments on MAKE you can now upload a user picture (see above). To encourage you to do so, please register (MoveableType) then click your name, upload a user pic and post a comment in this post - I’ll pick a few winners and send them a MAKE Pocket Ref!

(Update: We have uncovered some problems with the new commenting, working on it now - please keep posting though!)

(Update 2: Things seem to be working now, so please try - if you have (comment/login) issues at all please describe them in the comments, thanks!)

(Update 3: From our IT folks — ..have them recreate the account and or verify their signin/display names in MT system. They may be conflicting their username with their display name when signing in which would give an invalid login. I was able to go through the whole register process and was able to login with the new userID without any problems.)

Posted by Blogsnapper at 12:03 am

Great Prank! "write on the wall"! Now doesn’t that look like you wrote on someone’s wall? You can even do this on someones id tag at work when they leave it hanging around, I’d use a sharpie though.

This is a pocket sized prank, so you can do it whenever you want!

A USB-based twelve-button event controller (probably purposed from a game controller). The site is in German, so there’s not much more about it.
