Posted by Blogsnapper at 02:05 pm

We have seen quite a few multi propeller RC choppers but the MegaHex - 6 Propeller RC Chopper takes the cake! This bad boy has enough power to soar to great heights carrying a decent payload. Rock Band stage kit controlled by a .NET-powered micro

Rock Band Stage Kit with .NET Micro

Now that Microsoft has released their .NET Micro Framework under an open source license, we’re hoping to see some interesting projects come out of it. The makers of the .NET-powered FEZ boards wrote in with this cool project:

This project demonstrates how to use the Xbox Rock Band Stage Kit with Micro framework using GHI’s USB Host feature….no Xbox is necessary!

This example uses a distance detector to measure the distance from the stage kit. The closer you get, the more LEDs will turn on and you will get faster strobe. If you are too close, the fog machine will start working.Here’s some code:

// when it is connected, make a new device
RBSKController rbsk = new RBSKController(device);

// set strobe speed
rbsk.SetStrobe(RBSKController.StrobeSpeed.Faster);

// Turn on the second and sixth Blue LEDs
rbsk.SetLEDs(RBSKController.LEDColor.Blue, RBSKController.LEDs

Evolutionary Art Competition @ GECCO 2010 - Scott Draves, Electric Sheep is one of the organizers and one of my favorite artists!

This competition invites conference participants to demonstrate that genetic and evolutionary
computation can be applied to create impressive and provocative works of art. The competition
will identify the best work, be it an image, a sculpture, a music score, a video, an interactive
online experience, or a system that exhibits some form of independent creativity.

How-to: Stylish Pennant Flags

Posted by Blogsnapper at 02:05 pm

CRAFT: Sew and Sew

jon_kyrsten flags.jpg

Jon Sarriugarte and Kyrsten Mate are longtime Maker Faire favorites, whether this husband-wife team is showing off their flame-throwing SS Alpha Fox robot, driving around in their posh Golden Mean Snail Car (also with flame-throwing capabilities), or expertly entertaining the masses from the stage of the Boiler Bar.

They’re well-known for metal fabrication, sculpture, fire arts, and dancing, so we were a little surprised — and ultimately thrilled — to see their handmade pennant flags and the corresponding how-to on their Form and Reform website.

In true Jon and Kyrsten style, they ended up making 60 feet of these beautiful flags (yes, 60 feet), and created every part of them (Kyrsten even designed the star they silkscreened on each flag). And their beautiful daughter Zolie was on hand to “help” every step of the way.

The History of Zippers

Posted by Blogsnapper at 02:05 pm

unzipping-zipper.jpg

I still remember learning how to put in a zipper on the first skirt I ever made from a pattern. I might have had a little more patience if I’d read The Secret Sexy Life of Zippers, a great post from the Worn Through blog! It’s an extremely entertaining romp through the history of the zipper, including some fascinating images (ranging from one of the first zippers, which would make a better necklace than a zipper, through to the Duke of Windsor and winding up with Madonna) and an awesome Busby Berkeley video of a giant zipper made up of dancing ladies! Hop on over and you’ll never look at a zipper in quite the same way.

DIY Platform Bed Substitute - Out-Of-The-Box, Portable, Lightweight & Inexpensive

Posted by Blogsnapper at 02:05 pm

I wanted a portable, lightweight and inexpensive platform bed
substitute that I could put together and take apart at will and whose
individual pieces I could carry in my car when I move. I did find a
few metal bed frames that seemed at least somewhat portable - http://www.walmart.com/ip/Smar…
